With the advent of electricity, ceiling fans quickly spread throughout the world, becoming the standard cooling method in every enclosed space you can imagine: houses, stores, movie theaters, you name it. Even though one thinks mostly of ceiling fans to fight the hot weather, they are also pretty useful to help warm up the environment. When used together with any form of heating equipment, ceiling fans make a wonderful maximizing efficiency. As everyone knows, hot air rises - therefore, warm air will inevitably rise up until it's close to your ceiling - not the most efficient place to be. Using your ceiling fan spinning in the opposite direction will help spread the warm air around, meaning you'll make big savings in your heating bill. Most ceiling fans come with a \"winter/summer\" switch for that exact reason. You'll be able to use it all year round - it's not just a \"summer\" device. That's why you still see industrial ceiling fans in most shopping malls and any wide-open area stores. Even though they have big and powerful air conditioning units running continuously, the ceiling fans help maximize its efficiency. And the exact same thing is true if you use it in at home. Even if you have a furnace or air conditioning units, you should still consider installing ceiling fans. Often, just turning on the ceiling fan will be enough to cool everyone down, saving you from turning on your air conditioning system. And in those really hot days you need to turn the AC on, the ceiling fans will help reach a comfortable environment around your house much faster. And the same thing applies to those cold winter days, when you have to have to heat your place.
In its basic form, a ceiling fan suspends from the ceiling of a room and utilizes hub mounted paddles that rotate in a circular fashion. Air circulation is generated by the movement of the blades. This circulation provides a cooling or de-cooling effect as needed. To work as a cooling agent, ceiling fan blades move in a counter clockwise motion. In this direction, air circulation generated by the fan blades will evaporate sweat on the human skin cooling the body down. This in turns brings the room temperature down. The second use moves the fan blades in a clockwise direction capturing the heated air that has risen to the ceiling. As the heated air moves down the walls to the floor, the chill is removed from the room.
